World Book Day 2020: Date, book character costumes and event details

World Book Day 2020 is almost upon us.

The national event is a registered charity "on a mission to give every child and young person a book of their own."

It is designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading.

Here's everything you need to know.

When is World Book Day?

World Book Day falls on March 5, 2020, which is next Thursday.

It will see millions of Book Tokens and resource packs sent to schools around the globe to help children and young people celebrate authors, illustrators and books.

Why do people dress up on World Book Day?

It's only fitting that children and adults dress up on World Book Day as their favourite characters.

Roald Dahl characters, David Walliams books and Harry Potter stars often prove popular inspiration.

Supermarkets will also offer affordable children's costumes ahead of the event.
