'World-beating' coronavirus testing app doesn't know Isle of Wight is an island

Health Secretary Matt Hancock’s Covid-testing computer algorithm does not know the Isle of Wight is an island.

Symptomatic people are sent there for tests because none are available elsewhere.

But they have to mingle with other passengers on the ferry.

Olivia Wells, 14, was told by teachers she had to stay at home until she got a negative test after developing a cough.

Dad Richard, 58, and mum Malene, 47, of Lockersley, Hants, were unable to get a test near home but online enquiries revealed one was available 35 miles away at Blackwater Road – which turned out be on the Isle of Wight.

The family were not allowed to stay in their car on the ferry. Richard, a TV music composer, said: “That puts the lives of other passengers at risk.

The algorithm should eliminate the Isle of Wight from mainland searches.”

Olivia tested negative.
