MIAMI _ The United States vs. Dominican Republic game March 11 in the World Baseball Classic at Marlins Park has sold out, the Marlins announced Thursday.
Five players from the Marlins 40-man roster will take a break from spring training in Jupiter to compete in the WBC. Outfielders Giancarlo Stanton and Christian Yelich and catcher A.J. Ellis are on the Team USA roster; pitcher Edinson Volquez is playing for the Dominican, and third baseman Martin Prado will represent Venezuela.
Marlins Park is hosting six Pool C games March 9-12 in a four-nation group also including Colombia and Canada. More than 130,000 tickets have been sold, although tickets remain available for the other five games via Marlins.com/WBC.
Sixteen national teams including dozens of major leaguers are competing, with the other three pools being played in Seoul, Tokyo and Jalisco, Mexico. Four finalists will play for the championship March 20-22 at Dodger Stadium. The U.S. seeks its first championship. Previous WBCs have been won by Japan in 2006 and 2009 and by the Dominican Republic in 2013.
