World Bank Praises Egypt's Governance, Anti-Corruption Efforts

The Egyptian delegation meeting with World Bank officials (Asharq Al-Awsat)

The World Bank praised Egypt’s efforts in fighting corruption, governance, counterterrorism and its economic and social reform program, which contributed to increasing the rate of growth and injecting new investments.

Interim President of the World Bank Group and its CEO Kristalina Georgieva commended the legislative reforms carried out in Egypt in the field of fighting corruption and governance.

This came during several meetings held between members of an Egyptian delegation and WB leaders in the US capital, Washington.

The Egyptian delegation included Chairman of the Board of trustees of Anti-Money Laundry (AML)/ Combating the Financing of Terrorism (CFT) Unit Ahmed Said Khalil, Minister of Investment and International Cooperation Sahar Nasr, Prosecutor General Nabil Sadiq and Head of the Central Auditing Organization Advisor Hisham Badawi.

The meetings were also attended by Dean of the WB’s Arab Group Merza Hassan and Egypt’s Executive Director at the WB Ambassador Ragui El Etreby, according to a statement issued Tuesday by the Ministry of Investment and International Cooperation.

The delegation stressed that their country prioritizes the implementation of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi’s directives on preventing corruption, combating money laundering, and eliminating terrorism.

They said this comes in light of its work to support state institutions and improve their roles.

In addition to that, Egypt contributes to the political, economic, and social construction phase, which requires redoubling efforts and hard work in accordance with the highest levels of efficiency and integrity.

Georgieva affirmed her support to Egypt in the fight against corruption and the application of governance, which is the basis in all aspects of development.

She stressed that the provision of quality public services and the creation of conditions that encourage businesses to provide employment opportunities are fundamental to building opportunities and achieving prosperity for all.

The WB is keen to improve relations with Egypt in various fields, especially in governance, combating corruption, money laundering, small and medium enterprises, entrepreneurship, education, usage of the latest systems in the large data project, and support of decision-making units, she explained.
