Katarina Johnson-Thompson claimed a share of a bronze medal in a dramatic finish to the heptathlon at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
The Briton knew that it all came down to the final 800metres, where she needed to beat American Taliyah Brooks by six seconds or more to move herself into the top three in the standings.
Johnson-Thomspon, a two-time world champion previously, snatched the bronze in the most dramatic of fashion in the final sprint of the 800m, as she powered clear to finish in a season-best time of two minutes and 07.38 seconds, while Brooks finished ninth with a personal best of 2:13.17.
Those times meant that the Brit and the American would share third place, with the USA’s Anna Hall and Ireland’s Kate O’Connor taking gold and silver respectively.
Hall’s 6,888 points won her a maiden world title, with O'Connor joining her on the podium with 6,714. Three-time Olympic champion Nafi Thiam surprisingly withdrew from the competition with two events remaining.
Johnson-Thompson had trailed Brooks by 84 points going into the last event, and she dug deep to haul herself into the medals.
The pair tied on 6,581 to each take bronze in a remarkable end to a thrilling seven-event competition.
Johnson-Thompson had more success than the British men’s 4x100m relay team, as they did not finish in their heat after a poor changeover going into the final 100m.
Eugene Amo-Dadzie, who was set to run the final leg, set off too early, meaning that Jona Efoloko could not hand him the baton.
There was further relay misery for GB as the women’s 4x400m team also finished last in their heat.
