World Athletics Championships: Dina Asher-Smith wins historic 200m gold for Great Britain

Dina Asher-Smith became the first British woman to ever win a world sprint title as she took gold in the 200m at the World Athletics Championships in Doha.

The 23-year-old produced a terrific performance, breaking her own British record to win in 21.88, with the USA’ Brittany Brown taking silver and Switzerland’s Mujinga Kambundji the bronze.

Asher-Smith had already become Britain’s first ever world championship medallist in the 100m when she took silver behind Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce last weekend.

Fraser-Pryce was among a series of high-profile dropouts in the longer sprint, as Asher-Smith went in as hot favourite. She was faultless through the rounds, qualifying fastest for Wednesday night’s final after a dominant semi-final win on Tuesday.

The result caps another superb year for Asher-Smith, in which she also won the Diamond League final over 100m, coming off the back of a stellar 2018, when she became a triple European champion.

Asher-Smith will have the chance to add a third medal to her haul at these championships, too, when she leads the British quartet in the 4x100m relay later in the week as they look to improve upon their silver medal in London two years ago.
