Workshops to assist would-be councillors ahead of election

TALKS: Former Lismore mayor Jenny Dowell will facilitate the sessions.

WITH local government elections only a few months away, would-be candidates are invited to attend two Newcastle council information sessions next week.

The sessions will help people understand the key requirements of becoming a councillor, learn the rules and processes for registering as a candidate, and hear about the role of council, councillors and elements of council meetings.

These sessions will be facilitated by Jenny Dowell, a former Lismore councillor of 12 years and the Mayor of Lismore between 2008 and 2016.

The information sessions will be held on Tuesday, July 6 between 2pm and 5pm, and 6pm and 9pm. They can be attended in person at the City Administration Centre on Stewart Avenue or via Zoom. Registrations are essential and can be made on the council's website.

The deadline for candidates to register with the NSW Electoral Commission is August 4.

The council election is on Saturday, September 4.
