A senior official with the ACT's education union has been appointed the territory's newest work health and safety commissioner.
Jacqueline Agius will take on the role from April 28 for a five-year term.
She takes over from Greg Jones, who announced his retirement earlier in April.
Ms Agius said she was looking forward to the role.
"This is a exciting opportunity to ensure that workers are front and centre of work safety in the ACT," Ms Agius said.
"Fundamental to a successful economy and fair workplaces is the right for workers to return home after a day's work in the same state that they left home for work in the morning."
The incoming commissioner previously worked as a senior industrial officer for the ACT branch of the Australian Education Union, and was a member of the ACT Work Safety Council between 2016 and 2019.
The appointment to the role comes as Worksafe ACT launched several construction site crackdowns earlier this year in response to the deaths of two construction workers on separate building sites in Denman Prospect.
ACT Workplace Safety Minister Suzanne Orr welcomed the appointment.
"Ms Agius' strong record of achievement in work health and safety put her in a good position to make significant change for the ACT," Ms Orr said.
"One of her first tasks will be the development of a compliance and enforcement policy.

Worksafe ACT is set to become an independent body, following legislation introduced to the ACT Legislative Assembly last year.
