Works at historic Irvine's Seagate Castle will help secure its future

Investigatory works are to be carried out later this month at Irvine’s Seagate Castle to ensure the long-term future of the historic structure.

The exercise is part of a scheduled inspection programme which is undertaken at all council-owned buildings.

Residents should expect some disruption to traffic on the day of the survey – Tuesday, August 20.

Councillor Jim Montgomerie said: “We regularly monitor and inspect all of our buildings, including our historic landmarks like Seagate Castle.

“We have already carried out a routine inspection of the castle from the ground and will now be carrying out a detailed survey at high level to further investigate and record its condition.

“This will allow us to establish any future programme of repairs which may or may not be required.

“Seagate Castle is one of our most historic buildings on one of our oldest streets, dating back to Irvine’s earliest days, and we take our jobs as custodians of this important heritage building very seriously.”

While the inspection is undertaken, works will be carried out to remove vegetation growth.  This is a precautionary measure to help preserve and protect the condition and appearance of the castle.

North Ayrshire Council has liaised with Historic Environment Scotland and appointed Conservation Architects to ensure an appropriate and thorough approach to the survey.

It is expected that a traffic management system will be required on the day of the investigation which could lead to delays on the roads in the vicinity.
