Workplace parking tax: North Ayrshire Council reveal stance on levy dubbed 'poll tax on wheels'

North Ayrshire Council say they will not pass a workplace parking tax on businesses in the region.

Councils in Scotland were this week granted powers to impose an annual charge of around £415 per space on companies with 11 or more parking spaces.

Dubbed “poll tax on wheels”, it will hit drivers in the pocket unless they switch to public transport.

But a North Ayrshire Council spokesman said: “Following a decision taken at full council, we have no plans to introduce charges for workplace parking.”

Last week Nationalist and Green MSPs forced through the levy as part of the Transport Bill.

Glasgow and Edinburgh are the only local authorities that have signalled an intention to impose the levy. Five of Scotland’s six SNP minority-controlled councils have rejected the scheme.
