Workmen have discovered a human skull while working on a slip road off the M54 motorway.

The skull, and other skeletal remains, were unearthed at junction four of the M54, during a land survey.

Highways England said that the entry slip road would remain closed while West Mercia police investigated.

Speaking to ITV News, West Mercia police said the origin of the remains had not been determined, and added that forensic enquiries were ongoing.

However, as reported by the Express and Star, police said the skull belonged to an adult male.

West Mercia Police's Detective Chief Inspector Neil Jamieson said although it is "very early days", they believe that the remains could have been there for two years.

He added that his force was working with neighbouring and regional forces, to see if the remains may be those of any missing people.
