'Workman' dies after wall collapses on top of him at house

A man has died after he was seriously injured when a wall collapsed on top of him while he was apparently doing work at a house.

Firefighters, paramedics and police officers were called to the property in Mapperley, Nottinghamshire, at about 10.40am today.

Officers were called to reports that a man had been injured by a collapsing wall at a house, a police spokesman told Nottinghamshire Live.

The man could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man's death is not being treated as suspicious, the spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police said.

Neighbours said it is believed the victim was doing work at the house.

Christine Green, 69, who lives nearby, said: “I was walking past and somebody said a wall had fallen on one of the workmen.

"I had gone to the shop and when I got back there was a fire engine, paramedics and at least two police cars.”

A police spokesman said: "We were called to a report that a man had been seriously injured by a collapsing wall at a house in Haywood Road, Porchester, at 10.40am this morning.

"Officers attended, along with colleagues from East Midlands Ambulance Service and Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service.

"A man was pronounced dead at the scene.

"His family have been informed.

"We are not treating the death as suspicious."

Neighbours told of their shock after it was confirmed the man had died.

James Langham, 28, said: “We saw they had cordoned the road off and they put green tarpaulin up.

"There were two fire engines, police cars and an ambulance.

"There was a helicopter going round as well. But he died?

"That is horrible. There were lots of people standing around in the road.”

Richard Gregg, 34, added: “I saw when the fire engines came and the helicopter was circling looking for a place to land.

"You could tell where it was happening and you could tell body language of people outside that something bad had happened.”
