A person is in hospital and a pet dog is at the vet's after an early morning house fire in Mount Gambier, in the state's South East.
Emergency services were called to the Telford Street home just before 2 o'clock on Thursday morning.
The Metropolitan Fire Service said the blaze was sparked by an electrical fault in a bedroom.
Mount Gambier MFS Station Officer Rob Baker said four people were home at the time.
"It took us around about 10 minutes to extinguish the fire and undertake a search of the premises."
Mr Baker said one person had been taken to hospital with smoke inhalation.
"There were three other occupants that were at home at the time that evacuated, [they] did the right thing, went outside and shut all the doors in the house and awaited for our arrival.
"Crews also located a dog in the property that wasn't traveling so well.
The damage bill was estimated to be around $25,000.
Timely reminder
Mr Baker said it was fortunate that the house had a working smoke alarm.
"We always have a campaign around this time of year, to change your smoke alarm batteries when you change your clock," he said.
"It's a timely reminder to everyone to make sure that their smoke alarms are in really good working order."
He said it was particularly important with winter approaching.
"It does get busier [for crews] as we move into the winter period," Mr Baker said.
"Making sure that good maintenance is conducted on fireplaces, particularly wood fires, you know, the chimneys are cleaned and checked.
