Working out costly car insurance premiums caused by job titles

EXPERIENCED motorists know that their jobs can have a big impact on their car insurance costs.

But new research by vehicle leasing firm Vanarama has shown a substantial shift in premiums based on work roles between 2020 and 2021.

The worst job title for insurance costs is now recruitment consultant. Since last year, the premium has more than doubled from nearly £350 to over £815, taking it from 30th to first on the survey.

Health workers get the worst deal, though, as the only sector with an average figure in excess of £500 a year.

Only a handful of the sectors have escaped a £100-plus price increase since 2020 – but health workers are charged nearly £160 more for insurance in 2021.

And while “designers” had the third-most affordable premiums in last year’s results, the 2021 update sees them slide all the way to second with a charge of almost £780 a year.

More favourably, software and web developers dropped from the 13th and 15th-most expensive last year to within the cheapest six work roles this time around.

Vanarama chief Andy Alderson said: “If you’re facing higher insurance premiums, small changes to your driver details can help.

“Consider adding or removing named drivers and gauge the effect this has on the cost, and make sure you aren’t overestimating your yearly mileage.

“It can be tricky to find an exact occupation match on comparison websites – try inputting alternatives that still match your role but offer cheaper premiums.”
