Working in a job in sport during Ramadan is tough - watch the trials of a fasting cricket coach

Fasting throughout the month of Ramadan for Muslims is tough, but it's arguably even tougher for people doing sport.

Masoor Khan, 28, is a sport coach who spends his days running around coaching children and young people cricket.

He works for the Gloucestershire Cricket Board, the community arm of the Gloucestershire Cricket Club based at the County Ground in Horfield.

Bristol Live filmed Masoor during a coaching session at Hengrove Leisure Centre in South Bristol at night, after a long day with no food or drink.

Masoor lives in Montpelier, but was born and raised in Easton.

He is of Indian heritage, with his father and Mother coming to the UK from the state of Gujarat in 1989.

He has been in his current role for five years, so has become used to fasting each year while working in a very physically demanding job.

He is also a keen and successful cricketer himself outside work, playing for Clevedon Cricket Club in the West of England Premier League.

The film focuses on the impact working in this environment has on him when fasting, how difficult it can be, and the importance of to him personally. Masoor explains that it is far more than just not drinking or eating.

He said: “Fasting to me is an opportunity to reconnect with religion, prayers and the Quran.

"It’s about completely devoting myself and solely focus on it with a view to continue for the rest of the year.”

“It re-energises me for the road ahead and reminds me of what’s important in life.

"It’s far more than just not eating and drinking, it’s remembering what’s beautiful about the religion of Islam which many of us can forget during the year.”

Throughout the Holy month of Ramadan, Bristol Live is launching a series of video interviews and photo galleries with local people.

We are following Muslims in different jobs as they experience fasting, to find out how it affects their work.

This includes a sport coach, a teacher, an Uber driver, and a chef amongst others.
