Two men rushed to hospital after being burned by chemicals at Ayrshire distillery

Two men have been rushed to hospital after suffering what are thought to be burns at a distillery in Girvan .

The workers were taken to Girvan Community Hospital and then transferred to Ayr Hospital after the alarm was raised at around 4.30pm today.

A 31-year-old man has since been released from hospital.

A 25-year-old man is still being treated in hospital. He has serious burns although his injuries are not life-threatening.

It is understood those involved came into contact with a liquid at the distillery site.

Police officers were seen outside the Girvan hospital wearing masks as a precaution.

Staff within the hospital also received treatment for minor skin irritations they received while treating the two men.

One witness said:”I saw a lot of police activity at Girvan Community Hospital. Some of the police were wearing masks.”

A Police Scotland spokesman said:”Workers were at a nearby distillery, or in the grounds of the distillery.

“They came into contact with a liquid.

"Police Scotland officers and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service remain at the distillery site and the hospital, which is cordoned off as a precaution.

"The incident has been contained and there is no there is no wider risk to the public.

"The Health and Safety Executive has been informed and enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing."
