Workers returning to jobs from May 18 told to close unemployment claims on day they go back

People returning to work have been told to close their Covid-19 unemployment claims on the day they go back to work if they want to receive their full payment for the previous week or weeks.

It comes after Leo Varadkar confirmed Ireland is moving to phase one of the Government's five step plan on May 18, allowing some non-essential workers to return to their jobs.

However the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection warned anyone starting on Monday must close their Pandemic Unemployment Payment (PUP) claims on that date.

If they do this, they will be paid in full for this current unemployed week on Tuesday, May 19.

Any workers returning after May 18 are asked to close their claim on the day they go back to work.

A Department spokesman said the easiest way to close a claim for the pandemic unemployment payment is online via www.mywelfare.ie.

Any further queries regarding the payment should be directed to the Department’s dedicated income support helpline at 1890 800 024.

Friday's announcement confirmed that outdoor workers such as those in the construction industry and gardeners will be allowed to return.

DIY stores and garden centres, as well as any other shops that operate mostly outdoors, can also resume business.

Homeware stores will not be allowed to reopen as originally planned.
