The DXC employee is said to have recently returned from Italy and went into the office on Thursday and Friday.

The person in question then fell ill over the weekend, according to correspondence seen by ChronicleLive.

Employees on one floor of the DXC building were sent home on Monday and a deep clean was ordered.

They have been allowed to return on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for the company said: "An employee in DXC’s Newcastle operation reported feeling ill over the weekend and is being tested. As a precaution, employees on one floor of the facility were sent home for a time on Monday and a clean was initiated.

"The facility resumed normal operations on Tuesday.

"DXC, along with its global health advisors, continues to monitor the coronavirus outbreak and is taking proactive measures recommended by public health authorities to minimise exposure and transmission.

"In addition, it is following infectious disease plan protocols with a focus on employees’ well-being and business resilience."
