Workers fight British Gas fatcat's 'obscene' £2.4m pay amid pressure from union

Pressure is mounting on shareholders to reject an “obscene” 44% pay hike for the boss of British Gas.

Unison called for action over the £2.4million that Iain Conn raked in last year, saying his package was 109 times more than the £22,000 an average British Gas call centre worker earns.

The union, and the ShareAction campaign group, wants investors and pension funds to vote against British Gas owner Centrica’s pay plans at its May 13 annual general meeting.

Centrica chief executive Mr Conn’s package comes as the firm is slashing jobs and hitting customers with price rises.

The company had a profits rise of 12% to £1.4billion last year. Mr Conn had bonuses of more than £1.1million, his £940,000 wage, and £282,000 for his pension.

Matt Lay, of Unison, said the pay rise was “impossible to defend”.

Centrica said under Mr Conn, 56, the company had made progress to “entirely reshape the group”.
