Workers at Broadgreen and Royal Liverpool hospitals suspend strikes after 'breakthrough'

Hundreds of hospital workers have suspended strike action after "breakthrough" talks with the trust.

Mayor Joe Anderson has been praised for his intervention in the dispute that arose when workers feared their bosses at Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen Hospitals would withhold a week's pay as the out-sourcing giant "upgraded" its pay roll systems.

The ECHO revealed in March that those facing the change, dubbed 'Operation Greenfield' by the company, would not receive the first week's wages until after they leave the company - whenever that could be.

A month later, Mayor Joe Anderson said he would withdraw his support for a major merger involving some of Liverpool 's biggest hospitals unless the new pay contract was scrapped.

One the eve of another strike over the changes, around 250 hospital workers agreed, with their union Unite, to suspend the action.

The 24 hour strike was due to begin at midnight on Thursday, May 30 but will now not be taking place.

This follows negotiations in which they said the hospital trust agreed to pay staff back for 2018/2019 in full with further talks on the agreement to be held on Thursday.

Unite regional officer Derek Jones said: “I can confirm that strike action due to have started tomorrow has been suspended following last minute talks held today.

"The trust has committed to paying all ISS staff the back pay for 2018/19 in full.

“This is a victory for the union and its members at ISS at the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen Hospitals . This would not have been achieved without our members standing their ground.

“This shows what can be achieved when workers come together and show unity.

“We would also like to thank Mayor Joe Anderson for his role in assisting with all parties finding a workable solution.”

The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen Trust was not immediately available for comment.
