Worker seriously hurt falling down lift shaft on Liverpool building site

A building worker suffered serious injuries in a fall while working on a major new development in Liverpool city centre.

Police and paramedics raced to the building site on Old Hall Street at around 10.20am following reports a man in his 30s had fallen from height.

An air ambulance was also said to have landed nearby.

The man, reported to be a contractor, was taken to hospital with serious injuries to his head, back and legs.

It is understood he is believed to have fallen down a lift shaft.

The site, formerly the Liverpool Daily Post and ECHO building, is being converted into a hotel, retail and office space development.

The ECHO moved to a new base nearby in St Paul's Square, Liverpool city centre in 2018 and owners Reach PLC sold its interest in the ECHO building development in Liverpool in 2020

Merseyside Police said enquires were ongoing.

A spokesperson for the force said today: "We can confirm that emergency services are in Liverpool City Centre following an incident this morning, Thursday June 3.

"At around 10.20am, the North West Ambulance Service and police officers were called to a building site on Old Hall Street following reports a male in his 30s had fallen from height.

"The man has been taken to hospital with serious injuries to his head, back and legs."

The incident comes just two weeks after a father and son died after an accident on a construction site at the corner of Chapel Street and Rumford Place at around 3.30pm on Wednesday, May 19.

Clayton Bottomley, 17, from Castleford, West Yorkshire died just days after his dad, David, 53, following a fall while working together at the Unity Building in Liverpool city centre.

The following day, scaffolder Robert Duffy, 45, was rushed to hospital after an accident while working at a property on Rice Hey Road, Wallasey at around 1.20pm.

Tragically, the dad from Walton died later in hospital from his injuries, on May 23.
