SAMUT SAKHON - A construction worker was killed on Thursday after a pile driver collapsed on top of him while he was working on Rama II Road, in the latest of several fatal accidents on the notorious route.

The accident took place around 2pm on the outbound lane of Rama II Road, in front of a company near the Khlong Luang bridge U-turn, according to the JS100 Radio Facebook page. The pile-driving crane fell onto a male worker, who died at the scene.

Police from the Bang Tho Rat station, along with rescue workers, rushed to the scene to examine the body, collect evidence and investigate the cause of the accident. Officials also coordinated efforts to move the crane and reopen the area to traffic as quickly as possible.

The accident forced a temporary road closure to facilitate the operation and clear the area, causing congestion on the outbound lane.

Authorities have asked the public to avoid the area. Those who must travel through the site are urged to exercise extra caution and follow official announcements closely for their safety.

The Expressway Authority of Thailand has reported over 2,500 construction-related incidents on the perennially under-construction Rama II Road since 2019.

The figure includes 143 deaths and more than 1,400 injuries, according to thecivilengineer.org website.
