Work to start on improving 'eyesore' Carlton apartment block after residents said it was affecting their health

Work to improve an "eyesore" apartment block in Carlton will start next week after residents said their health was being affected by the state of the building.

Walton Court residents have been waiting two years for internal and external improvements to be made to the block of flats which has been described as "decrepit".

Residents previously spoke to Nottinghamshire Live about the issue and said the company needed to address the insulation problem at the 1960s building, which was affecting people with health issues and costing high heating bills.

Jigsaw Homes, which owns the property, split over two blocks, has said it will now be carrying out improvement works.

Improvements will be made to the external appearance of the court, redecoration and refurbishment of the communal areas and the installation of a sprinkler system with work starting on Monday, November 4.

The sprinkler system will be implemented in the new year across both blocks and will continue until the end of March 2020.

The refurbishment of the communal area will start after Christmas to minimise the disruption over the festive period for residents.

Bonnie Rogers, 74 and retired, who has has lived at Walton Court for six years said the poor insulation in the building leaves her cold during the winter which affects her health.

"It's good news. This has been nearly a seven year wait for me," she told Nottinghamshire Live.

"They have told us they are going to insulate the walls and upgrade the building. They are starting on Monday, November 4.

"It's starting to get really cold now with bitter evenings and bitter mornings. So I don't want it affecting my health anymore.

"When I first moved here nearly seven years ago they promised me the work would be done. So it is long overdue for the upgrades to come in."

Gary Heaton, operations director of asset management for Jigsaw Homes Group said “As discussed with our residents, the refurbishment of Walton Court will start on Monday, November 4.

"Our contractor J Tomlinson will be erecting scaffolding on Block B to carry out cleaning of the external cladding, necessary repairs and install improved insulation.  This work is due to be completed by Christmas to minimise disruption to residents during the festive season.

"Work on Block A will start in January 2020, followed by the refurbishment of the communal areas and work to the car parks.  Alongside this work, in the new year Walton Court will also benefit from the installation of a sprinkler system.

"We hope that all works will be completed by March 31 2020.

"Residents will be kept informed throughout the works and a dedicated liaison team, led by the J Tomnlinson on-site manager, will be on hand to help and support the residents.”
