Work to replace slabs progressing in Nottingham's Old Market Square

Workers continue to repair and replace stonework in Nottingham's Old Market Square - which is expected to last for a few months.

Nottingham City Council said work started to take place earlier this month to clean up the square after the Winter Wonderland event was held there over the festive period.

Work started on Monday, January 13, as part of a clear-up before the square is reopened for the public to enjoy.

Parts of the square remain fenced off.

It comes after concerns were raised by Nottinghamshire Live in October that the £8m square was looking worse for wear, with broken slabs of granite, tyre marks, and shrubs were dying or neglected after "wear and tear took its toll".

The current works are routine maintenance and were planned specifically for a period when there were no events on in the square.

Workers are currently focusing revamping the southern terrace stonework - which will take a couple of months to complete.

After this, there will be some paving slabs replaced around the square.

Shoppers welcomed the continued work.

"It's very much-needed," said Tom Barker.

The 33-year-old of Mapperley added: "It's probably the most famous and well-used part of the city, so it needs to look its best.

"I'm glad they're putting time into it to restore it. It gets a lot of use from the events."

Martin Gregory, 44, of Clifton, said: "I like the fact the city can host events like Winter Wonderland and the beach in the city, but it will bring some wear and tear.

"It is needed, definitely so it's good to see the work underway."

A Nottingham City Council spokesman previously said: "It is almost 13 years since the redesigned square opened, over which time it has staged many significant events thanks to the new layout.

"These events increasingly make use of the terraces to support heavy equipment and structures. This has led us to improve and strengthen the terraces so we can continue to stage popular events which attract large numbers of visitors to Nottingham.

"Aiming to avoid clashes with events, work on the terrace near the tram stop and paving repairs will continue until April, with work on the Debenhams side expected to start later this year.

"The final clear-up from Winter Wonderland was underway on January 13 and if any additional cleansing or remedial works are identified, the cost will be met by the Mellors Group under the terms of their contract."
