Work to install facilities at an Irvine school could start soon

Work to build a new nursery and gym at an Irvine school could kick off soon as council bosses prepare to hire a contractor.

Annick Primary in the town is in line for a £2.58 million extension.

This week officials advised North Ayrshire councillors to hand the contract for the building work to Emtec Group Ltd.

A report for cabinet said: “North Ayrshire Council requires to establish a contract for the proposed extension and mechanical and electrical upgrade to Annick Primary school, Irvine.

The proposed works will provide a nursery facility and a gym extension to meet the needs of the school pupils and the local community.”

Councillors were due to vote on whether to appoint Emtec Group Ltd  for the big job at cabinet this week.

The council put the contract out to tender, which attracted 16 expressions of interest. Four firms submitted tender responses for the job, which is estimated to last for one year.

Officers recommended Emtec Group Ltd to get the job after an evaluation process.

A report on the contract recommendation has been published on the council website.

The extension is needed to make sure the council is able to send kids to nursery for longer in the Stanecastle area.

The Scottish Government wants all councils to increase time in nursery for three, four and some two-year-olds from 600 to 1140 hours per year.

There is also a push for better PE facilities as part of the curriculum.

The council has put aside a budget of £3.4 million for the entire task.

Space has been a problem at the primary prompting the council to put in place three portable ‘modular’ classrooms.

The school roll has been increasing and the council had to take action to cope with increased demand.
