Work to identify 'skeletal' remains found in Walker goes on as police confirm death is not suspicious

Work to identify mystery human remains found in a wooded area of Walker is today continuing, one month after the grim discovery was made.

But police have now confirmed that the death is not suspicious.

Police were called to the area, in Fossway, at around 7pm on September 3, after the adult human remains were uncovered.

A large area, near some stables off Waverdale Avenue, was cordoned off and specialist search teams spent several days at the scene, as an investigation was launched.

Today a Northumbria Police spokesman confirmed that the death is not being treated as suspicious.

However, the remains have still not been identified.

A spokesman said: "At about 7pm on September 3, we received a report that adult human remains had been found in a wooded area in Fossway, Walker.

“Enquiries are ongoing to formally identify the individual. We are currently treating the discovery as non-suspicious.”

The Chronicle understands identification of the remains could take some time.
