Work to expand Gedling Country Park car park 'can't finish quick enough'

Dog walkers say that expansion works to a Nottinghamshire country park's car park "can't finish quick enough".

Work has been taking place to expand Gedling Country Park's car park by 100 spaces.

Since opening in March 2015, the park has become increasingly busy, with around 100,000 visitors per year at the Spring Lane 580-acre site.

It is hoped this will reduce congestion on nearby roads - particularly on weekends and bank holidays.

An eight-metre CCTV pole will also be built at the site to help protect vehicles.

Ailsa Robbins, 59, of Gedling, said: "This is a great place to be able to come and blow away the cobwebs right on the doorstep.

"But it does get really busy at weekends and in the summer.

"The expansion work can't finish quick enough for me. Cars park on the main road which can be a bit dangerous as drivers come along quite quickly."

Tim Jennings, 50, of Woodthorpe, added: "It's a lovely place to come to. The expansion will help the cafe here.

"Work has been going on for a bit now. So it'll be good when it's all done as it does get really busy."

The development comes alongside work to install two new aerial platforms which will give better views of the park.

They are part of a £120,000 investment and are expected to be ready for visitors in March.

They will be positioned north and south of the solar panel farm at the park - and one of the platforms will be four metres high.

Both platforms will feature wheelchair and pushchair accessible ramps and panels with information about the views beyond, such as Lincoln Cathedral and Belvoir Castle, near Grantham.

Gedling Borough Council's deputy leader, Councillor Michael Payne, previously said: “Since we opened Gedling Country Park in 2015, it has become a very popular visitor’s attraction.

"This extension will create an extra 100 spaces which should reduce parking congestion on the adjoining roads on the busier days and bank holidays.

"The car park extension coincides with a number of new investments in the park such as the new viewing platforms and the outdoor seating area which will be installed in the upcoming months.”
