Work to begin on widening pavements in Tollcross to allow space for physical distancing

Work is due to begin on widening pavements in Tollcross.

As part of the Spaces for People programme, Tollcross Road will see the short-term changes coming into force from next week.

Some of the on-street parking in the area will be suspended to make way for the repurposing of road space.

Glasgow City Council is currently making adaptations to a number of streets to provide extra space for physical distancing in a bid to stop the spread of coronavirus.

The changes will allow people to move around where space is limited and readily access shops, businesses, community facilities and public transport.

The measures will be in place for a minimum of 10 weeks and will be reviewed in line with the Scottish Government's routemap out of lockdown.

The Spaces for People programme includes a number of changes to the city including the reallocation of 25 km of kerbside road lanes in the city centre for walking and cycling on streets such as St Vincent St, Argyle St, Queen St, Hope St, Renfield St and Bath St; the short-term suspension of one-third of the city centre's 2000 on-street parking bays and changing pedestrian crossings to be automatically set at the green man and requiring to be activated by vehicles, rather than on pedestrian demand.
