Work to begin on incredible mural honouring Sunderland's top goal scorer Bobby Gurney

Preparation work has begun to paint a mural honouring Sunderland's top goal scorer.

Bobby Gurney played for the side between 1925 and 1950, scoring 228 goals during his time there and making him the club’s all-time goalscorer.

Born in Silksworth in 1907, a mural is now set to be painted on the gable end of Golden Fleece pub in the village.

The project was spearheaded by life-long Sunderland AFC fan Gav Willis, of Silksworth, who felt there needed to be a tribute to the footballer.

Gav, 42, said: “The idea itself was born about 15 years ago when we tried to get Sunderland AFC to do some kind of statue but the idea never got anywhere.

“Then with lockdown and working from home I had some spare time so decided to look into it.

“Frank Styles has supplied an artist’s impression of what it will look like to help people visualise the final installation.

“The pub has been taken over by a new owner and is being renovated. They heard about the project and thought it would be great on the building. I spoke to Bobby’s granddaughter as well who knows about it and is supportive.”

Gav started a fundraising campaign to raise £6,000 for the work to be carried out.

Preparation work has already begun with wall repaired and sealed in preparation for painting.

He said: “We are now at the point in the project when work can begin very soon on the mural.

“We have not yet raised all of the money needed to complete the project so will continue with our fundraising efforts.

“Everyone has been brilliant and supportive of the project.”
