Work to begin along stricken Portrane coast to save it from serious coastal erosion

Work to save more of the decimated Portrane coastline from being lost to the sea is to start next week.

The emergency coastal erosion measures are being carried out by Fingal County Council in an effort to slow the serious erosion that threatens to destroy the coastline.

The €900,000 project will see an additional 800 ”SeaBee” reinforced concrete units installed across the beach in the scenic north Dublin town.

Three lines of “SeaBee” units will be placed along the beach to protect an additional 565 linear meters of the coastline vulnerable to erosion during storms and high tides.

The work will be carried out throughout the remainder of April and early May. They are considered critical works under COVID-19 legislation.

In addition to the emergency works, consultants appointed by Fingal County Council have prepared a plan to address significant and long-term coastal change in the Rogerstown Outer Estuary including the Rush coastline.

According to the council, due to the ecological sensitivity of the site and the complexity of the issues involved, it is likely that the assessment of this plan will take over a year to complete.
