Work taking place to produce a 'flurona' vaccine to tackle coronavirus and flu in one go

Moderna are working on a vaccine that will protect people from both flu and Covid, it has been reported.

The single jab, which could be ready next winter, will mean people will not have to get separate vaccines to protect them against flu and Covid.

The vaccine would protect people against catching both or either illness.

WalesOnline reports so far 160 cases of flurona - where people catch both viruses at the same time - have been found in the UK.

The vaccine company are also working on a jab that protects against Omicron and which could be ready within two weeks.

A Moderna vaccine that protects against flu, Covid and RSV - another respiratory virus that can be serious - could be ready by 2024, reports The Mail.

Moderna UK chief Darius Hughes said: "Our No 1 priority for 2022, after getting the right Covid vaccine for the Omicron variant, is to try and really drive forward our flu and RSV programmes to see if we can get a combination, single-dose respiratory vaccine.

"It would be just fantastic for patients if you could have one appointment – go along, have that jab done, and you’re protected against all of those major respiratory diseases for the winter.

"The benefit for the NHS, and all the vaccination services, and ultimately patients, we think, is going to be huge."
