Work starts to transform iconic Edward Everard's printing works into hotel

A grand new hotel which will sit behind one of Bristol’s iconic architectural gems is set to open this year.

The former Edward Everard's printing works in Broad Street is known for its unique Art Nouveau façade which has been a feature of the city’s architecture since the turn of the 20th Century.

The print works themselves closed in 1967, but the offices behind have been occupied since, mainly by NatWest and DirectLine.

The last office workers moved out at the end of 2017, and a group of squatters moved in during 2018. They were evicted as part of a major bailiff operation in September last year.

Now it looks like work has begun to turn the buildings into a 250-bed hotel, six serviced apartments, a residential block of 23 one-bed and studio apartments, some co-working space and retail units.

Developers Artisan Real Estate Investors Limited purchased the printing works in March 2018 and Irish company Dalata Hotel Group has taken over the old NatWest offices.

The new four-star hotel, which will include a bar, restaurant and extensive conference facilities, will become part of the Clayton chain.

The printing works façade will be used as the main entrance to the hotel, according to plans.

The developers won planning permission in July 2019 for the project, and now hoardings have appeared around the print works building on Broad Street indicating work is about to start.

A message on the Clayton Hotel website about the Bristol site said the team was “looking forward to welcoming our first guests to Clayton Hotel Bristol in 2020”.
