Construction work has begun to build a huge new Lidl store in Patchway.
The 2,125 sq metre store on land south of Concorde Roundabout on Hayes Way is set to employ 40 people and serve the new communities at Charlton Hayes and on Filton Airfield.
It will be located less than two miles from two supermarkets at Cribbs Causeway and less than three miles from another Lidl store in Stoke Gifford.
South Gloucestershire Council granted planning permission for the German budget supermarket chain in January this year after more than 850 residents signed an online petition supporting the development.
They said the store would help Charlton Hayes feel more like a community, drive down food prices and bring jobs to the area.
Now construction work has finally begun on the site and the shell of the building is starting to take shape.
There is no date of exactly when the new store will be open to customers - just a sign that says ‘coming soon’.
The new store is located adjacent to the Aerospace Museum and just a stone’s throw from the Travelodge, Subway and Costa Coffee Drive Thru located on Hayes Way next to the A38.
The store will provide 158 car parking spaces, including 8 dedicated disabled spaces and 11 parent and child spaces. Secure cycle storage will also be provided. Access to the site will be via the Concorde roundabout.
It is proposed that the Lidl store will be open between the hours of 8am to 10pm Monday to Saturday (including Bank Holidays) and 10am to 4pm or 11am to 5pm on Sundays.
According to Lidl an area of the site is being reserved to be marketed for future office use to encourage additional employment opportunities in the Patchway area.
