Work starts on refurbishment of Custom House Square in Belfast

Work has begun on a refurbishment of Custom House Square after years of constant use has taken its toll.

The Department of Communities has said that the work on the square is designed to "future proof" it for years to come and will see new paving and lighting installed.

The work is already under way and is expected to be completed in April of this year.

During the scheme, Belfast City Council has also taken the opportunity to lay cables for a high-speed internet project.

Custom House Square was opened in 2005, and since then it has seen years of constant use, including hosting high profile concerts for the likes of Kasabian, Stiff Little Fingers, Kodaline, Lewis Capaldi, and Carl Cox, which has taken its toll on the area.

Scooter has also announced two dates for August 2021.

A Department of Communities spokesperson said: “Custom House Square was constructed in 2005 and has been in constant use ever since. The activity on the Square has taken its toll. The Department is undertaking refurbishment work to the public space.

"A new sub base will be laid and re-paved and the lighting in the Square will be upgraded. This should future proof the space for many years to come. Belfast City Council has also taken the opportunity to lay cables for its high-speed internet project. The works are due to complete by April 2021.”
