Work starts on multi-use civic and events space in Comrie village centre

Work to transform an area at the heart of a Perthshire village into a multi-use community asset got under way last week.

Local firm AB Gairns Contractors started work in Comrie ’s St Kessog’s Square on Monday.

The project will see the car park and seating area in Drummond Street turned into a multi-use civic and events space.

The Square is to be extended into the fenced-off area to the north and will incorporate a shelter, upgraded and extended lawn area, seating and other elements.

Formerly the site of Comrie Garage, Comrie Parish Church purchased the ground in 2014 and many groups, trusts and like-minded individuals have contributed to the cost of the redevelopment project over the years.

It is hoped the project – which is being managed by the church – will be completed by the Spring of next year, although that may depend on external factors such as the weather during the winter months.

Comrie Parish Church Session Clerk Murray Lauchlan said he was among many in the village pleased to see the project progressing.

He said: “We’re delighted to see the project starting and we’re excited to watch it develop through time.

“It officially started on Monday and you can see quite a lot of work has been done already.

“It’s going to be done as a whole project and will be an open space for the community, managed by the church, and anyone who wants to use it will be able to contact the church.

“We’re hoping it’ll be finished by Spring, but that might depend on things like the weather.”

Mr Lauchlan added: “Thank you to all those in the community who moved their vehicles on Sunday ahead of the work starting the following day.”
