Work set to finally start on eyesore site following delay

Work on a major development in Stokes Croft will start again after it was announced in May that plans would be delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Carriageworks had been described as one of Bristol's most at risk heritage buildings and has laid derelict since the mid-1980s.

The site is owned by PG Planning Group. which acquired the site in 2017 with planning permission to redevelop the Carriageworks and Westmoreland House.

Earlier this year it announced that it had been granted permission by Bristol City Council to go ahead with a £26million scheme.

This included new plans for the building to create a new plaza, a handful of shops and offices, and more than 100 homes.

It would also include 112 bedroom apartments. Ten of the homes will be affordable, as negotiated by a previous developer.

But, due to the pandemic they had to put their plans on hold.

Now that lockdown has begun easing, the Carriageworks Action Group announced on Wednesday (August 12) that PG has now started their preliminary works on the Carriageworks site with a view to the main construction starting in the near future.

The work includes remediation and site preparation so that work on the construction site can properly begin soon.

The building has a long history of various planning groups taking it on, with plans never following through, but in March planning permission was granted to the PG Group at a committee meeting.
