Work on two Edinburgh railway bridges next year will cause six months of diversions

Two Edinburgh railway bridges will undergo major repairs and restoration next month, with months of diversions set to be put in place.

Calton Road and New Street will be part of a £1.7 million project to re-paint and repair their respective railway bridges which will commence in January 2022.

Calton Road will be subject to a lane closure whilst the repairs take place from January 17 to August 19. A closure of New Street will also take place between April 26 to August 19.

Drivers are advised to plan ahead whilst the road closures as a diversion will be in place via Calton Road, Watergate, Canongate and Cranston Street.

The work being done will include grit blasting, steelwork repairs, steel strengthening and painting work to protect the bridges from the elements. This forms part of Network Rail’s commitment to running a safe and reliable railway.

Network Rail commented on how the work will make the railways more secure in Edinburgh. Christina Thomson, Scheme Project Manager said: "The investment we’re making in the bridges will extend their lifespans."

"The work will allow us to continue running a safe and reliable railway in and around Edinburgh. We’re pleased to confirm that while New Street will close during the second phase of the works, Calton Road will remain open throughout the project, with a lane closure in place.

"Drivers should plan their journeys in advance as some delays may occur while the lane and road closures are in place. We are thankful to the community for their patience and understanding while we carry out these essential works."

The Calton Road bridge is perhaps better known for being included in the popular film, Trainspotting, where Ewan McGregor's character, Renton, famously sprints down the street, under the bridge and into an oncoming vehicle.
