Construction of 101 modern homes will get underway in Ferguslie later this month.
The long awaited new homes will see local families moved from damp-ridden 100-year-old properties to properly insulated homes that benefit from solar panels and sound proofing.
The development will sit on the grounds of the former St Fergus’ Primary School and provide a mix of council housing and shared equity homes which Tannahill residents will be able to buy.
It includes various types of homes, from one-bedroom bungalows to one and two-bedroom flats and houses featuring two, three and four bedrooms.
AS Homes, which was last year appointed as Renfrewshire Council’s chosen developer for the project, will start working on the properties in the next few weeks, with the entire scheme expected to be completed within 18 months.
John McIntyre, chairman of Ferguslie Park Community Council, said the new homes will bring the Tannahill area in line with improvements in other streets in Ferguslie Park.
He said: “It is high time that people in this area were provided with warm, comfortable homes, rather than the damp and dilapidated houses of the past.
“I’m happy that the council has worked alongside the tenants of Tannahill on what is the final stage of the regeneration process in Ferguslie and I’m delighted as chairman of Ferguslie Community Council to see this being done after years of hard work.”
In October, Renfrewshire Council revealed a footprint which shows most of the houses will be fronting directly on to Blackstoun Road and Bankfoot Road, with a green playing area at the heart of the development.
Pedestrian access to schools, connected estates and green spaces on the other side of Bankfoot Road are also included in the plans.
Existing homes in the area will be demolished to make way for the new development and Renfrewshire Council has insisted the new homes will be given to those currently living in the area.
Councillor Marie McGurk, convener of Renfrewshire Council’s communities, housing and planning policy board, said: “It is really pleasing to see work starting soon on new build homes in Ferguslie Park.
“We’ve reached this stage in partnership with the local community, considering the types of homes to meet their needs and thinking about the needs of future households.
“The development has a mix of property types and sizes and detailed consultation has ensured the views of local residents are incorporated into the final designs, including fencing around gardens, roof solar panels, creating a safe and welcoming environment.”
She added: “This major investment complements a wider masterplan for the area led by the people who live there and know the area best, considering new uses for vacant and underused land, ways to enhance green spaces and enhancing community uses and activities.”
The development will be completed on a phased basis, with tenants moving in as each phase is completed in the same approach as the council’s recent new build projects in Bishopton and at Johnstone Castle.
