Work on new road crossings to improve safety gets underway in Paisley

Work to upgrade a crossing on a busy Paisley road is set to be completed within weeks as the council and police work to improve safety in the area.

The previous Zebra crossing on Brediland Road and Mannering Road in Foxbar is in the process of being turned into a Puffin crossing as part of an ambitious £560,000 plan by council bosses.

Renfrewshire Council has identified more than 40 crossings throughout the local authority area which will be overhauled as part of the project, with the first 12 crossings selected to be changed from Zebra crossings to Puffin crossings - which will have traffic lights with sensors to allow youngsters to cross safely while travelling to school.

The new crossings - labelled ‘safe routes’ - will be completed by March next year, having been identified as priority areas using crash map data and speed surveys.

It’s hoped the changes to the crossings will help address concerns regarding “road safety, speeding and crossing locations at or around schools, nurseries and key junctions in towns and villages.”

Police in Paisley are also cracking down on speeding in the area and carrying out additional patrols to catch out drivers breaking the law on the busy road.

The efforts by police and the council to improve safety on Brediland Road have been praised by Paisley Southwest councillors Stephen Burns and Lorraine Cameron.

The plans will also see two other crossings upgraded in the ward within the next six months, including the junction with Braehead Road and Glenburn Road and Gleniffer Road and Donaldswood Road.

He says the changes will be vital in ensuring the safety of pupils travelling to school in the area.

“Brediland Road is very busy with traffic and I am pleased it is one of the crossings which have been chosen to be completed in the first phase of the works as well as Gleniffer Road and Donaldswood Road and Braehead Road and Glenburn Road.

Provost Lorraine Cameron added: “Keeping people safe on the roads is highly important and it is fantastic to see this funding making a difference and for the work on one of many important crossings in the local authority be coming together.”

Inspector Laura Hammill, of Paisley’s community policing team said: “We have been working alongside councillors to address concerns regarding drivers speeding on Brediland Road as this is a main route to school and we are keen to ensure it is safe for the public.

“We have been carrying out additional patrols of this area at certain times to monitor cars and address any issues there may be.”
