Work on long awaited scheme to slow down traffic in Long Ashton to get underway

Work to introduce a 20mph on a section of the main road through Long Ashton is to get underway next month.

The new speed limit, which will replace the current 30mph restriction through the centre of the village, is being introduced as part of measures to make Long Ashton safer for pedestrians and motorists.

Work is due to start in March or April, once the gritting season is over.

The main road is often used as an alternative to the Long Ashton bypass during peak times when traffic is heavy.

The proposals were drawn up as part of the Long Ashton Village Enhancement Scheme (VES), put together as part of the Neighbourhood Plan.

The plan revealed residents were keen to see improvements, including looking at ways to create an attractive and vibrant village centre.

People also wanted to see slower traffic along the main road and safer routes for pedestrians.

A series of proposals forward in the VES by a parish council working group, including the introduction of a 20mph speed limit through the centre of the village, were agreed.

A parish council spokesman said: “Many residents are horrified at the speed of traffic along the main road.

'It is often used by children'

“This is particularly worrying in the shopping area where pedestrians get a raw deal from narrow and uneven footways.

“Yet this is the very area where safety should be paramount, used by young and old alike and essential for village life to thrive.

“It is often used by children on their way to and from school and families want to encourage walking.”

The new zone - aimed at making the centre safer for pedestrians –will go from just west of Providence Lane to west of Lovelinch Gardens.

Other improvements are also planned as part of the work, including some parking restrictions at Lovelinch Gardens.

The safety of the zebra crossing on Long Ashton Road at the top of Theynes Croft, used by students attending Northleaze School, will also be improved.

It will be given a buff coloured surface treatment and additional road markings installed to provide additional warnings to drivers.

The junction of Weston Road and Wild Country Lane will also be improved by moving the 30mph limit nearer to the village and adding increased road markings.

Some parts of the scheme, including a raised crossing outside the Co-op and squaring off the junction of Birdwell Road and Weston Road, have had to be deferred after detailed surveys raised issues which have meant costs have increased.

The work is being funded by the parish council using reserves earmarked for  the VES and road safety.

Money will also come from the community infrastructure levy (CIL) - money paid by local developers for improvements to the local infrastructure.
