Work to restore Newport 's historic arcade has restarted after being paused due to coronavirus.
The £1.1 million plan to restore the 19th century Market Arcade has resumed after workers were forced to down tools just a month after work started in February due to the outbreak of Covid-19.
Newport council has confirmed specialist contractors Anthony A Davies have been able to resume work in Market Arcade, following all the necessary safety requirements.
Funding was secured from the Heritage Fund, Cadw and Welsh Government to restore the arcade that runs from High Street to Market Street, with the plan being confirmed back in February.
The work includes the restoration of the shopfronts and refurbishment of the glazed canopy.
Councillor Jane Mudd, Leader of Newport City Council, said: “While the delay was unavoidable, I’m really pleased that work has started again on a scheme that is set to make such a difference to the arcade and this area of the city centre.
"I would like to add that we appreciate the involvement of all the owners because without their continued cooperation and goodwill the regeneration scheme would not be able to progress.
"I would also like to thank the Heritage Fund and the lottery players who contribute to the fund, as well as members of the community who contributed to the project.”
