Work gear and paperwork dumped close to beauty spot

Paperwork and work gear was among the rubbish fly tipped close to a Merseyside beauty spot.

Sankey Canal stretches across St Helens as one of the oldest canals in the country. One area of the canal in Newton-le-Willows has been hit by fly tipping.

Earlier this year, the ECHO reported how the canal had been blighted by drug paraphernalia and beer cans dumped close to, and in the canal.

Sankey Canal in St Helens was opened in 1757 and was England's first of the Industrial Revolution, and the first modern canal, connecting St Helens to the River Mersey at Spike Island, Widnes. Despite the canal's historical and cultural importance to the area, piles of waste have been dumped in and around the waterway, including used needles.

One person, who took to Facebook to share pictures of the mess, said: "On my morning walk along the canal we came across a load of dumped mess next to our canal. The funny thing is they left so many letters and business documents along with half his wardrobe and left over rubble."

St Helens Council has been approached for comment.
