Work to dismantle a controversial Balloch sculpture is almost complete.
The £820,000 geese installation at the Stoneymollan Roundabout was completed just 16 years ago, however was labelled “an ugly blemish” and an “expensive mistake” by residents.
Most of the structure was removed by Amey engineers after suffering storm damage last year, with the final pillars being taken down by workers last week.
The 15m high sculpture, voted for through a design competition, caused controversy when it was put up in 2005.
As well as being slammed as a waste of money, environmentalists also blasted the destruction of hundreds of wild orchids which were dug up to make way for it.
A Facebook campaign group was set up calling for its removal, with them declaring it “a prominent ugly blemish and offensive carbuncle.”
Welcoming its removal earlier this year Gillian Clark, of Balloch and Haldane Community Council, said: “It was an absolute waste of money.
“It was up for a relatively short time and that’s it now down.
“They spent over £800,000 putting it up and then spent even more on it when they infilled it so it must have been close to £1million.”
Whilst Gartocharn councillor Sally Page added: “I am pleased that this expensive mistake is being removed as it had become damaged, looked unsightly and was dangerous.
“The National Park should stand out because of the natural beauty, without statues with flying geese.”
