Work begins on sea defences at picturesque Dumfries and Galloway village

Work got underway this week on completing sea defences at Carsethorn on the Solway after years of coastal erosion.

The scenic village has been losing land gradually to the sea as storm tides ate away at gardens and lawns along the front.

Fears had been growing that if the erosion continued the public road and carpark immediately behind could be threatened.

The worrying situation prompted the Carsethorn Community Development Group to act and money was secured from the Regional Coastal Benefit Fund, the Regionwide Community Fund 2020 and Kirkbean Community Council to complete rock armour defences from one end of the village to the other.

The work, using 7,000 tonnes of boulders sourced locally, is expected to take two weeks.

Fabric backing is also being installed to stop sand and gravel being sucked out from underneath.
