Work begins on Edinburgh historic pub to turn it into three luxury flats

A historic Edinburgh pub is beginning its transformation into three flats.

The Coopers Rest on Easter Road was once a well known Hibs bar but has remained closed on the street near the stadium for many years.

Eagle-eyed locals have been sharing images on the construction work on the building over the last few weeks, voicing hopes that the site may become another hospitality venue.

However, planning permission for three flats at the former pub was approved in November 2020 and work has begun on transforming the bar into residential properties by agency Format Building Design.

The former cellar of the pub is also being converted, with two of the flats stretching across two floors into the basement.

There will be two two-bedroom flats and one three-bedroom flat spread across the space, each with their own separate street entrance.

Planning permission for the site was in fact first granted in 2014, but has since been renewed for the work that has begun in the past week.
