Work begins on 152 new build house development on old Leeds college site

A new 152-home development in Leeds has begun construction on a former college site.

The development is taking place on the former site of Leeds City College’s Horsforth Campus which has been closed since 2017. According to the developers, Stonewater, the project costs £22.5 million.

Last year, the development was given the green light by Leeds City Council and said construction must begin within three years. Now, one year on from permission being granted, construction has begun.

In the original application, the developers, who are working alongside regeneration specialists Vistry Partnerships said: “The proposed development will provide significant onsite green space and high-quality landscaping. This will include the retention of existing copses and additional tree planting, as well as the cultivation of habitats for owls and bats.

“The site is not currently publicly accessible and therefore this significant area of green space can be appreciated by the new and existing residents of Horsforth.”

According to Stonewater, the homes will also have air source heat pumps and solar panels instead of gas boilers. They hope this will reduce the site’s carbon footprint and its impact on the environment.

The homes are also reportedly designed to accommodate working from home, with space for a home office. The houses will also have private gardens while the flats will have communal gardens.

It will also include plenty of green space, according to Stonewater, alongside exercise equipment and art made from recycled materials. The developers hope the scheme will be completed by 2026.

The developers also say the scheme will take into account the local wildlife.
