Work begins in Glasgow's south side to repurpose car parking spaces for pedestrian usage

Work has begun to create extra space for pedestrians in the south side of the city to protect public health and suppress a resurgence of Covid-19.

The additional space will be created on Deanston Drive in Shawlands, with footpaths temporarily widened to provide more room for people to physically distance themselves for one another.

The south side of Deanston Drive will be narrowed by two metres on a section of road between Skirving Street and Afton Street with extra space for people made available by repurposing the immediate road space usually occupied by parked vehicles.

The work is part of Glasgow City Council's Spaces for People programme, which has seen a host of temporary infrastructure measures introduced across Glasgow to provide extra space for people to walk, wheel or cycle as coronavirus restrictions remain in place.
