Wordsmith speaks up for subs

Following Jeff Jarvis's article Are editors a luxury that we can do without? comes a response from the ever-readable blogger, Wordsmith. She writes: "Subs do not just clean up typos and dodgy punctuation or cut copy to fit. They also need an excellent working knowledge of media law... Many journalists do not write great English (and rely on the subs desk to do rewrites)... there will always be a place for a skilled and experienced [corrected - see comments] editor who is capable of more than a simple tidy-up job."
