Most Australians find it difficult to understand what it is like to flee your home country without any security of what the future might hold in the next. Words Travel Story fest puts the voice of refugees at centre stage this year, along with some of Australia’s best spoken word poets and storytellers.

As part of Writing Through Fences, the event that opens the Australian Poetry Slam National Final, three refugees – Hani Aden, Yarrie Bangura and Kaveh Arya – will present their stories through poetry, performance, discussion or slam.

The trio are impressive: Hani Aden is a young Somali writer who wrote from detention on Christmas Island, runs a poetry night and is publishing a book; Yarrie Bangura fled Sierra Leone with her familyto be raised in a camp in Guinea, and now performs with the Baulkham Hills Ladies Troupe and the Sierra Sisters; while The Unlikely Poet, Kaveh Arya was born in a political prison. He has sought refuge in Australia and speaks to many through his poetry.
