Wor Flags unveil amazing Gallowgate End-sized banner ahead of Newcastle United vs Liverpool

Wor Flags have unveiled their Gallowgate End-sized surfer banner for the first time at St James' Park ahead of Newcastle United's massive clash with Liverpool.

The 78m-wide and 54m-tall flag - which weighs a staggering 54 stone when compacted down but stretches from the side of the pitch to the back of the Gallowgate End and from one side of the stand to the other - was paid for by donations from more than 2,000 Newcastle supporters which totalled in excess of £15,000.

Initially, Wor Flags had intended to wait until the first game of the 2019/20 campaign to unveil the banner but, having raised more than £15,000 in less than three weeks in March, the group accelerated their plans and opted to field it in front of a global audience live on Sky Sports ahead of the game against the title-chasing Reds.

The name of every single supporter who pledged a donation is emblazoned on the banner, which spells out the message 'We are the Mags' in the centre.

The focal point of the predominantly black-and-white-coloured flag is a re-imagined skyline of Newcastle , the North East and beyond. It features iconic city-centre buildings, but also those from the wider region; St James' Park, Grey's Monument and Newcastle's famous bridges are accompanied by Whitley Bay's Spanish City, Hadrian's Wall and the Angel of the North.

The flag was created by Polish firm Ultras1312 and took almost three weeks to print - before two members of Wor Flags drove a van, via a ferry to the Netherlands, on a 800-mile-round trip to bring the banner to St James' Park .

This new surfer flag will be used ahead of important home matches at St James' Park, and the smaller one will now be sent-off to be repaired and will still feature ahead of future games.
